Somebody suggested that we needed a dedicated topic for stressed owners looking after their poorly equine friends. I definately agree! So how about starting this off?

emo-9.gif Update on Spike. Xrayed today, vet really pleased with his progress, hopefully xrays will confirm her opinion. Bandage downgraded which I think he was pleased about. Bummer........another week in the box before I can start walking him out. And he was SOOOOOO grumpy today but generally hasn't been too stressed. Hopefully he's turning the corner. emo-crossfingers.gif

good thinking lel. it can be a really stressful time trying to keep them sane and hoping they heal like they should. the first walkout/ turnout can be just as stressful. how did spike injure himself?

no change with eric just constant dressing changes where i wish i had at least 6 pairs of hands. next dressing change tomorrow. i have to wait for hubby to come from work to help me hold his leg up and put on the layers of dressings i started stressing this morning when i realised that it was bon fire night tomorrow. ohmy.gif

anyway good luck to everyone nursing a poorly horse your not alone emo-bighug.gif

Well done Lel.
Loula was supposed to go out for first time today. But..... by the time my farrier had finished shoeing and trimming time was a bit short, so I chickened out and went for a hack instead. rolleyes.gif .
Am planning on 'biting the bullet ' tomorrow. emo-crossfingers.gif .
Gotta say she was first class having her pedicure, considering she's been confined to barracks for 8 weeks. Farrier was great made huge fuss of her first 'cos she's understandably suspish of 'new people'. Something to do with being perforated by them. laugh.gif .
Good luck to everyone in our situation, there is light at the end of the tunnel. emo-banana.gif

I'd like to say that I have no need for this thread, but as usual we have a poorly pony. Morse is back on box/yard rest, it doesn't look like lami, but he's hobbling about nonetheless.
So bute and cuddles for him....plus x-rays and probably some blood tests. The joy of keeping horses!

Update on Spike. Thought it was too good to be true! Vet reported that last xrays showed that he has had THREE fractures. I cried all afternoon in work on weds. he's got to stay on box rest for a futher TWO weeks before She'll even think about letting me start walking him out. How the hell did he manage that!

I've been so depressed this week that i couldn't even be bothered to take Henry out for a hack let alone go jumping at Piblwyd today.

Three fractures!! Poor, poor Spike emo-eek.gif . At least you now have a clear idea of what the problem is Lel. But that doesn't help you feel any better. What is the long term prognosis? Will he heal completely?
Really feel for you and am sending positive thoughts your way. emo-bighug.gif

Who knows how it happened? It has, its costing me a small fortune and has scuppered my plans for him for the time being. Vet changed bandage today and has said that whilst he "should" make a full recovery there may always be the danger that the sesamoidal ligament will snag on the join and he may have a nagging lameness or underlying weakness. Jumping in deep sand is a def no-no, not that any of us deliberately jump in deep sand but you are subject to others venues and have to take what ground they got sometimes. Also said mounted games wouldn't be advisable which is a bummer considering he's a pony club pony but I think she really means no advanced level handbrake turns.... which is actually what I did have in mind for him - that and M&M Working Hunter. She's just being cautious I know.. he may not have any long-term effect at all if I'm lucky. One more week of confinement then more xrays. I bloody well hope the insurance coughs up!

And obviously he's p****d off!

Spike's been sedated for the last three days..after he tried to kick me in the head I decided that was the best course of action for both of our sakes! But he still managed to have a rearing fit, get his legs over the stable door and try to jump out, then had a complete paddy when i closed the top door and laid into it with his forefeet. I give up! If he's knackered himself up...tough!

Sounds like a nightmare, it's so horrid that you can't explain to them that it's for their own good, isn't it sad.gif
