Has anyone tried Vetrofen yet? I've just started Flora on it today, so if anyone's interested I'll update with how it goes. There is a lot of advertising going on at the moment for it - and it sounds too good to be true, to be honest.

Flora has bone spavin in both hocks, and I've tried various supplements with her (including the one from the vets' which works a treat with our other spaviny pony).
At the moment, she is pretty much unusable unless she's on bute, so I'll be very happy if this works for her.

Interesting that it can be used under jockey club rules. It does sound too good to be true! Hope not though wink.gif

I'd be interested 2know how u get on with this having an o.a.p myself. To be fair she's pretty good, but she's not getting any younger & does get a bit stiff in the very cold weather.

Which option have u gone for with flora HP ? Am I being thick or are the 21 & 90 day courses the same, just a longer dose? blink.gif

emo-crossfingers.gif for you

Just the same.

It's a bit misleading, as a loading dose - two sachets, twice a day - is needed in the first few days. They recommend this where there is a lot of pain/stiffness, and I'd guess most horses whose owners are opting to fork out for something more would fall into this bracket.

I've bought two 21-day packs because of this, otherwise there'd be nothing left.

Just been out to do a bit of lungeing so I can update - I've hardly seen her in daylight this week so far.

I have to say there is a big difference blink.gif On her left rein she trotted out nicely instead of shuffling along, trying to move her rear end as little as possible. The other difference was that she trotted when asked, whereas usually she will query for a while rolleyes.gif whether I'm really sure I really want that.

On the right rein she looked a bit stiff in walk and at first was less keen to trot on. BUT as I asked again, she decided to do a few circuits in canter/buck instead, then settled into a good free-moving trot. (You have to know Flora to understand why this is a shock.) It's very different from the sluggish responses I'm used to at the moment, even when she's on bute. When Flora's feeling good she is a lovely forward ride, but to be honest I haven't seen much of that side of her in the past few years.

I'm quite amazed blink.gif . Just a bit dubious though in case I am feeding her amphetamines rather than aspirin! The testimonials in the ads all seem to stress how lively their horse had become on Vetrofen.....

That sounds good!
I'm not sure about the wording in the advert where it says a bute alternative, i.e. is this product going to mask pain? I don't want to give it to my pony acting like bute as such, but more of a joint supplement if you see what I mean.

I know what you mean, you don't want to mask pain where it could lead to more damage. When I phoned the company I was told it acted as an anti-inflammatory as well as pain relief...but it's hard to know when things aren't vet-tested.

I suppose it depends on the problem - with Flora, she needs to be kept moving as much as possible, but so far it has been difficult to persuade her on that one!
